Lia Savonea has been announced as the only candidate for the presidency of the High Court of Cassation and Justice, after the Superior Council of Magistracy opened the selection procedure. Savonea, a supreme court judge since 2023 and former president of the Bucharest Court of Appeal, was a member of the SCM from 2017-2023. However, her promotion has sparked controversy, as she was criticized for a 2015 ruling on a light sentence in a sexual abuse case. The Declic community started a petition against her promotion, arguing that the judiciary must protect children.
