The Chief Prosecutor of the European Public Prosecutor's Office, Laura Codruța Kovesi, sent a letter to the European Commission, warning that recent legislative changes in Slovakia regarding agricultural subsidies significantly reduce the protection of the financial interests of the European Union. These changes allow the request for EU funds even for those who are under criminal investigation or convicted, limiting the suspension of payments only to certain offenses.

Kovesi emphasized that this legislation affects the ability of authorities to impose effective measures during criminal proceedings. Additionally, several European parliamentarians have expressed similar concerns, highlighting the risks of fraud associated with the distribution of funds. Furthermore, Kovesi mentioned the legislative issues in Greece, which block the investigation of parliamentarians by European prosecutors, thus affecting ongoing investigations into agricultural fund frauds.
