Ionuț Costea, former president of Eximbank, was brought to the country in June 2025, after being extradited from Turkey, where he had been hiding after being sentenced to six years in prison for bribery. The High Court of Cassation and Justice, led by judge Lia Savonea, decided to release him, invoking Decision no. 50/2025 of the Constitutional Court, which emphasizes the importance of respecting the right to defense and access to Justice. Additionally, Sebastian Vlădescu, former Minister of Finance, was sentenced to 7 years and 4 months in prison for bribery, but he surrendered and served just over two years of his sentence. Both releases are the result of the application of the statute of limitations on criminal liability.
