The President of the Călărași County Council, Vasile Iliuță, leader of the county branch of the PSD, bought three properties in Italy in 2023, while he was being investigated or tried in two DNA cases, according to an investigation by Public Record. The transactions involved a former customs post in the Apennine Mountains, a building in the Alps, and a three-star hotel in Rimini.
The former customs post, renamed “La Gabellina Iliuță,” was allegedly purchased for 70,000 euros, although the former owners had invested approximately 800,000 euros in renovations. Another building, purchased for 80,000 euros, was subsequently sold to the son of a mayor from Călărași for the same price. The hotel on the Adriatic coast cost nearly one million euros and is managed by the politician’s son, who is almost 24 years old.
According to the documents analyzed by the publication, all the properties came from forced executions involving bankrupt Italian companies. During the same period, Iliuță was on trial for abuse of office and threatening a prosecutor. He was definitively acquitted in 2024. In another case, he was sent to trial for security contracts concluded with a company that did not meet the legal requirements, with the damage estimated at more than 580,000 lei.
The investigation also follows his political rise and the growth of his family’s wealth, from his work in agriculture and his position as mayor of the Vâlcelele commune to leading the county, a position he has held since 2016. According to the latest available wealth declaration, the family’s income exceeded 831,000 lei, while the dividends received amounted to more than 2.8 million lei. Vasile Iliuță did not respond to Public Record’s requests for comment.
