IICCMER announced on Friday the resumption of the initiative started in 2012, opposing the inauguration of the monument to Adrian Păunescu.
The Institute emphasizes that honoring a personality who promoted communist propaganda and the cult of Nicolae Ceaușescu is incompatible with respect for the victims of the dictatorship. Although it does not contest the literary value of Păunescu's work, IICCMER highlights the significance that a monument confers to such a personality.
Adrian Păunescu led the magazine "Flacără" and founded the Flacără Literary Circle, contributing to the promotion of the official ideology of the communist regime. IICCMER warns that maintaining this monument may perpetuate nostalgia for communism and blur the role of personalities in propaganda.
The Institute reiterates the importance of understanding recent history and developing a public memory based on historical research and respect for the victims of the communist regime.
