Nicușor Dan publicly condemns, in a Facebook message, the “gestures” of Călin Georgescu’s supporters, who sang “Eternal Memory” to journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu. The head of state draws attention to the risk that political disagreement could be turned into a tool of intimidation.
“No journalist should become the target of threats, harassment, or violence because of the opinions they express. Freedom of the press is guaranteed by the Constitution, and it cannot exist without the freedom to speak and report without fear,” President Nicușor Dan wrote on his Facebook page.
The president further emphasizes that protecting these principles does not depend on political sympathies, but is a matter of respect for democracy and for the dignity of every citizen.
“We may profoundly disagree with a journalist and criticize their opinions, but what we cannot accept in a democracy is turning public debate into threats, intimidation, and incitement to hatred,” Nicușor Dan also stated in his message.
We remind you that Călin Georgescu’s supporters sang “Eternal Memory” to Cristian Tudor Popescu during the protest at the Central Arrest Facility, after he stated that the possible death of the former presidential candidate would represent “an immense gift” for AUR, clarifying that he was referring to the political exploitation of the situation.
