A 50-year-old supporter of Călin Georgescu was taken in for questioning after allegedly striking two cameramen with a metal object outside the DIICOT headquarters in Bucharest. The incident took place on Monday, October 5, 2026, while the journalists were trying to obtain a statement from the father-in-law of the former presidential candidate, who was being questioned as a witness in a fraud case.
Bucharest Police announced that the victims were intentionally assaulted, and officers from Precinct 10 opened a criminal case for assault or other acts of violence. The suspected man was identified and taken to the station by a gendarmerie crew to establish the exact circumstances.
The investigation is ongoing, and the competent prosecutor’s office will be notified. Bucharest Police strongly condemned the assaults against journalists and emphasized that press freedom and the safety of media representatives must be respected.
The incident comes two days after Cătălin Avrămuță, known as the “Dacian Standard-Bearer” and a sympathizer of Georgescu, allegedly struck a gendarme during a protest held outside the Central Detention Center.
