The publication Europa Liberă România, a bastion of quality journalism, will close on March 31, 2026, after eight years of activity.
The decision is not the result of the internal dynamics of the publication, but of external factors, especially the suspension of funding by the Trump administration, which severely affected both Europa Liberă and Voice of America.
Over time, Europa Liberă has managed to maintain its relevance in the Romanian media landscape, being cited over 6,000 times between January 2024 and March 2026.
In 2024, the publication ranked fourth in the top online sources, and in 2025 it rose to third place, with impactful investigations that generated significant interest.
Its closure is an alarming signal for the press in Romania, highlighting the financial difficulties faced by independent media institutions.
The mediaTRUST report highlights that the disappearance of the publication is not due to a decrease in editorial impact, but to external decisions that led to the end of its activity.
