Ionuț Dumitru, honorary advisor to Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, issued a warning regarding the evolution of the fuel market, emphasizing that a return to the low prices of the past is impossible due to the international context. Although the state is intervening with compensation measures, the public's expectations of seeing a significant decrease are unrealistic. Dumitru explained that capping commercial markups has only managed to temporarily stop price increases, without eliminating them.
The government plans to implement a reimbursement of a portion of the excise tax, but the effect of this measure depends on the price of a barrel of oil. If the price of oil rises, the effect of the reduction will be nullified. Dumitru emphasized that Romania cannot afford more aggressive interventions in the market due to limited fiscal space, having large deficits of over 6% of GDP. The state has resorted to overtaxing the profits of oil companies and capping margins to prevent unjustified price increases.
