The European Parliament is calling on the European Union to consider deploying a naval operation in the Black Sea following attacks on civilian commercial vessels off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria that resulted in casualties. The request was included in a resolution adopted on Thursday, with 432 votes in favor, 52 against and 88 abstentions.

Members of the European Parliament attribute responsibility for the incidents to Russia and consider them a further escalation of the war against Ukraine, as well as a major factor in the deterioration of security in the western Black Sea.

The resolution calls for additional support for Romania and Bulgaria in detecting and tracking hostile drones, protecting shipping and defending critical maritime infrastructure. The European Parliament also calls on NATO to consider an initiative dedicated to security in the Black Sea and stresses the importance of cooperation between Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.

MEPs call for the accelerated operationalization of the EU's maritime security center for the region, increased maritime surveillance and stronger protection for undersea cables, energy connections and other strategic assets.

The resolution also provides for the use of unspent European funds from the SAFE instrument to support the defense capabilities of Romania and Bulgaria. The European Parliament also calls for rapid-response mechanisms and coordinated measures to protect NATO's eastern flank and the Danube Delta.
