The Civil Liberties Union for Europe (Liberties) has published an alarming report on press freedom in the EU, highlighting the threats and discrediting campaigns faced by journalists.
The report, which should alert EU officials, emphasizes that media freedom and pluralism are under attack across Europe. Journalists are facing extreme physical violence and legal harassment, while the independence of public media is eroded by political interference.
In Romania, politicians have launched discrediting campaigns against media institutions, labeling them as "foreign propaganda machines." The report also highlights the concentration of media ownership and lack of transparency, with examples from Hungary and France. Public trust in the media has drastically decreased, and many member states are not effectively implementing relevant European legislation. The report calls for swift and firm action to protect journalists and press freedom in the EU.
