Recent changes in the PSD's status, under the leadership of interim president Sorin Grindeanu, have sparked a reaction from journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu. The new status declares that PSD presents itself as a modern center-left party, but leader Paul Stănescu emphasized that the orientation is rather Christian-democratic, stating that "Without God, nothing is."

Popescu commented on Facebook, suggesting that Ion Iliescu, the founder of PSD, would be turning in his grave because of this change, considering that Iliescu advocated for the separation of politics and religion. He mocked the new direction of the party, comparing it to a return to religious values, and mentioned the strange noises reported by the guards of the Ghencea cemetery, insinuating that Iliescu would be disturbed by the current developments of the party.
