The Chamber of Deputies adopted on Wednesday, with 238 votes “in favor,” three “against” and 15 abstentions, a bill allowing motorcycles and mopeds to use lanes designated for public passenger transport, under the conditions established by the road administrator. The Chamber of Deputies is the decision-making chamber.
The bill amends traffic legislation and introduces measures intended to ease traffic flow. Motorcyclists and moped riders will be able to move between or alongside queues of vehicles stopped at traffic lights or at level crossings, provided the maneuver is carried out safely.
Passing queues will be permitted for bicycles, motorcycles without sidecars and mopeds only if there is sufficient lateral space, the maneuvers of other road users are not affected, and the speed does not exceed 20 kilometers per hour.
The legislation also defines the “safety space for motorcycles and mopeds,” measuring three meters in length before the stop line at signal-controlled intersections and railway crossings equipped with barriers or half-barriers.
Local authorities will have to arrange parking spaces for motorcycles and mopeds in public parking lots with at least six car spaces, as well as safety spaces, bicycle lanes and public transport lanes, with the approval of the traffic police.
The bill had previously been adopted by the Senate.
