The management of the CARFIL Brașov arms factory received warnings as early as spring 2026 regarding possible acts of sabotage targeting Romania’s defense industry, general director Mircea Tanțău said. The information was reiterated during the summer, while security measures were intensified starting in March and, additionally, in August.
The statements were made on Tuesday, following the fire that broke out on September 14 in the industrial park area of the CARFIL platform. Tanțău said he was notified at around 03:00 by the officer on duty and that, when he arrived at the factory at around 06:30, the fire had already been extinguished.
Initially, the director believed that the fire had been started in revenge by someone familiar with the area. Later, in the context of the investigation and the warnings received, he assessed that the incident may have represented an attempt to intimidate and exert pressure on the management of CARFIL and ROMARM.
Employees and security guards received additional training, access by cars to the factory parking lot was restricted, and suspicious individuals who appeared to be monitoring the area were removed.
SRI announced that it had identified a sabotage network coordinated from Russia, while DIICOT is investigating three foreign nationals for attempting acts of diversion. According to investigators, the network allegedly targeted sites in Romania and other European countries. CARFIL produces ammunition and military equipment, including products intended for use with drones.
