Călin Georgescu paid a fine of 200,000 lei for irregularities regarding the financing of the 2024 presidential campaign

Călin Georgescu was fined 200,000 lei by the Permanent Electoral Authority for irregularities related to the financing and conduct of his 2024 presidential campaign. The former candidate has already paid the fine, according to AEP representatives.

AEP President Adrian Țuțuianu said the institution had notified the competent authorities about matters that fell outside its remit. In addition, 13 coordinators of Georgescu’s campaign and the financial representative were fined for administrative violations, following notifications sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Țuțuianu explained that Georgescu had declared zero lei in electoral income and expenditure to the AEP. These statements were deemed inconsistent with information presented in briefing notes from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Directorate-General for Internal Protection and the Romanian Intelligence Service.

According to the AEP president, the annulment of the 2024 presidential election was not ordered by the Constitutional Court because the AEP had failed to notify the CCR regarding the declaration of zero expenditure, but on the basis of the grounds set out in CCR Decision No. 32/2024. The fine imposed on Georgescu is the highest provided by law for such violations.
