Călin Georgescu, detained in traffic by DIICOT. DIICOT searches at his residence in a €1 million fraud case

Former candidate for the Presidency of Romania, Călin Georgescu, was taken from traffic on Monday, September 21, 2026, and taken to his home in Mogoșoaia, where DIICOT prosecutors conducted searches in a case concerning the formation of an organized criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences.

Investigators executed five search warrants in Bucharest and in the Ilfov localities of Mogoșoaia, Ciolpani, and Buftea. According to sources cited by the national press, businessman Ionel Rusen would also be targeted in the case.

DIICOT claims that three people, two Romanian citizens and one Italian citizen, allegedly formed, starting in September 2021, a group operating in Romania and the United Kingdom. Its members allegedly presented themselves as businesspeople capable of obtaining financing worth millions of euros and allegedly requested guarantees from victims for purported foreign loans.

In one case, a person was allegedly promised financing of six million euros, followed by one of 15 million euros. The victim allegedly transferred guarantees worth more than 1.1 million euros, the damage reported in the case.

The persons concerned are due to be questioned at DIICOT headquarters. The investigation is ongoing, and the charges must be proven in judicial proceedings.
