Gigi Becali has been working for more than a year on one of his passion projects. The owner of FCSB is building a wooden church in the area of Lake Techirghiol, within the territory of Tuzla commune. The place of worship is dedicated to Saint Sophia and was erected approximately 200 meters from the lake.
The scandal began in 2025, following a report filed by the Romanian Ornithological Society. The organization reported works carried out in the protected natural area of Lake Techirghiol, a Natura 2000 site and wetland of international importance. The authorities found land leveling, access roads, and foundations built without the necessary permits.
Becali is reproached for having used concrete in the construction of the church, but he says that the concrete was used only to level the land. “But it does not rest on concrete; it is made of wood and is not attached to the concrete.” The landowner, however, found a solution to this problem. “Fine, then I’ll remove the concrete and keep it on stumps, on pieces of wood. And if you don’t want it that way either, then I’ll tie it up, pick it up with a crane, and move it from here,” Becali explained.
Gigi Becali reacted vehemently and moved the dispute into the political sphere as well. The businessman harshly attacked Diana Buzoianu and accused USR of opposing his project.
“Nicușor Dan’s adviser came with an order. There is no decision to dismantle it. The prosecutor is in cahoots with the NGO. You’d think the NGO was the Romanian state. The adviser to the head of the Romanian state intervened. Advisers are filing cases. I built a church suspended on wooden beams. It is intravilan land. It is my property. Can’t I make a wooden tent? On the beach, you can make a tent for Satanists. That suits them.
Buzoianu is Satan’s child. She created a buffer zone. She said that my property is a buffer zone. It is wood. I don’t need a building permit. I need a placement permit. It is intravilan property.
We must get rid of the Satanist USR,” Gigi Becali declared.
