Petrișor Peiu, the leader of the AUR senators, drew attention to the high cost of Romania's state debt, highlighting that the country spends 5.2% of GDP on interest payments related to public debt, the highest percentage in the European Union. In comparison, spending on education is only 3.3% of GDP, while health spending is close to 6%. Romania ranks 14th in the EU in terms of the size of public debt relative to GDP, at 60% of GDP, with countries like Greece and Italy having debts of over 140% of GDP.
"Romania spends the most on interest related to public debt in the European Union: 5.2% of GDP! The government spends much less on education: only 3.3% of GDP, and on health, it has expenses comparable to those on interest, which do not exceed 6% of GDP. And yet Romania is only 14th in the EU in terms of the size of public debt relative to GDP. Countries like Greece or Italy have a debt more than double that of Romania (140% of GDP compared to 60% of GDP), but they spend much less on interest than the government in Bucharest does. Why is that? Simple: we have the highest interest rate because we have the highest level of budget deficit: 7.9% of GDP! How can a country that spends one and a half times what it spends on education on interest talk about the future?" said the leader of the AUR senators, Petrișor Peiu.
