The President of the Special Commission against Domestic Violence, Alina Gorghiu, commented on the life sentence of a man who killed his partner with an axe, highlighting that this decision by the Prahova Tribunal sends a clear message: crimes of this type are not tolerated. Gorghiu emphasized the importance of early intervention to prevent violence, encouraging victims to seek protection orders.
The law on femicide, which will be put to a vote in the Senate, does not create a separate crime but allows for the classification of murders in the context of domestic violence as qualified murder, with severe penalties. Additionally, the law introduces aggravating factors for violence committed in the presence of minors or in cases of repeated abuse. According to statistics, nearly 60 women were killed in 2025, most in contexts of domestic violence.
