Alexandru Muraru asks the Culture committees to summon Sorina Matei for explanations after the attempt to gain access to the TVR journalists’ group

Liberal leader Alexandru Muraru asked, on Friday, the joint Culture committees of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to summon Sorina Matei after she allegedly attempted to join the internal WhatsApp group used by TVR journalists.
Muraru argues that the access of the public television network’s president-director general to the group, used by approximately 200 journalists to discuss topics, assign teams and organize editorial work, represents an attempt to monitor the newsroom. In his view, the management’s presence in such a space could create pressure, fear and self-censorship.
According to his statements, TVR journalists opposed the access, citing the institution’s management’s lack of editorial powers. Sorina Matei allegedly subsequently left the group after employees reacted and the information appeared in the press.
Alexandru Muraru says the situation contravenes the principles of editorial independence and the European rules applicable to public media services. He called for a public explanation and guarantees that TVR’s administration will not interfere in the newsroom’s work. In the same post, the Liberal made political and ideological accusations against Sorina Matei and criticized PSD and AUR’s support for her appointment. The accusations were not accompanied, in the cited text, by a response from TVR’s management.
