Associations of beekeepers and farmers, together with civil society organizations, have sent an open letter warning about a legislative initiative that would allow aerial spraying of pesticides with drones, a practice banned in the European Union since 2009. The proposal was adopted by the Senate in an emergency procedure and has been sent to the Chamber of Deputies, which has set a short deadline for the Agriculture Committee's report.
The signatories of the letter emphasize that this haste raises questions about the transparency of the decision-making process and that the risks associated with aerial spraying include water contamination and harm to biodiversity. Additionally, a survey shows that 89% of Romanians oppose the use of banned pesticides.
Organizations are calling for the rejection of the initiative and the organization of a broad debate on the sustainable use of pesticides in Romania, highlighting the importance of environmental protection and public health. Among the signatories are organizations such as ROMAPIS, WWF Romania, and Greenpeace Romania.
