After locals reported a disturbing smell associated with hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the environmental authorities in Călărași County resumed air quality monitoring in the Ciulnița commune. The first measurements taken at the end of January showed exceedances of up to 20 times the maximum allowed concentration, raising questions about health risks.
Monitoring was resumed on February 3, 2026, following repeated complaints from residents. ANMAP specialists emphasized that prolonged exposure to H2S, a toxic gas, can be dangerous to health. Authorities will continue measurements in the coming days to assess the situation and decide if additional protective measures for the population are necessary. So far, no information has been provided about the source of the pollution.
