Pollution with non-ferrous sterile ore dust in Maramureș due to strong winds

Strong wind has lifted dust particles from tailings ponds containing non-ferrous ores in the Baia Mare area, transporting them to nearby localities.

The wind has dispersed dust particles from three ponds: Bozânta Mare, Romaltyn, and Tăuții de Sus.

The spokesperson for the Maramureș County Emergency Situations Committee (CJSU), Dan Bucă, stated that the wind reached speeds between 50 and 70 km/h, affecting visibility. Although no health issues have been reported, residents have noted discomfort due to the dust being carried into inhabited areas. CJSU Maramureș has sent a mobile laboratory from the Environmental Protection Agency (APM) to conduct measurements in the locality of Lăpușel. Additionally, yellow and orange weather warnings have been issued for wind intensifications.
