A new aerial target entered Romania’s airspace without authorization on Saturday afternoon, from the direction of the Republic of Moldova. The incident prompted the deployment of two F-16 aircraft and a helicopter to verify the situation, while the authorities sent RO-Alert messages in several counties in the northeast of the country.
According to the Ministry of National Defence, the target was detected by the radar surveillance system approximately 10 kilometers from the border with the Republic of Moldova. The two F-16 aircraft were on Air Policing combat duty and took off to monitor the object.
The National Military Command Center informed the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, and the first RO-Alert message was sent at 17:04 to the population in the north of Iași County. Subsequently, similar alerts were issued in the counties of Neamț, Botoșani, and Bacău. The alert was also extended to Suceava, where the message was sent at 18:44.
The Ministry of National Defence states that, since the beginning of 2026, 35 unauthorized incursions into Romania’s airspace have been recorded. On the same day, a drone also flew over the airspace of the Republic of Moldova without authorization, leading to flight restrictions being imposed in the northern and central parts of the country.
