Writer Salman Rushdie, at the age of 78, returns to the world of fiction with the short story collection 'The Eleventh Hour / La onzième heure', which will be published on June 11 by Gallimard. This book, initially published in English in November 2025, contains five short stories that explore 'the wisdom of old age' through the characteristic 'magical realism' style of the author. Rushdie survived a violent attack in August 2022, which left him without sight in one eye, an incident related to his death sentence in 1989 by Iran for the novel 'The Satanic Verses'.
In 'The Eleventh Hour', the author weaves together stories from India, England, and America, reflecting on his own life as a writer. During a meeting with readers in Paris, Rushdie emphasized the importance of literature addressing universal themes, not just personal experiences, and mentioned that he is working on a book about Voltaire's 'Candide'.
