Al Pacino, 86, will receive the highest honor awarded by SAG-AFTRA, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, for his lifetime achievements and humanitarian contributions. The actor will accept the award on February 28 at the 33rd annual Actor Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be streamed live on Netflix.
Pacino is the 62nd actor to receive the honor. In a message issued after the announcement, he said he had always felt “at home” with scripts and his fellow actors, and that his work had been one of the greatest joys of his life.
The award also recognizes his efforts to help disaster victims, combat hunger and poverty, and support local theater companies, including the Los Angeles Shakespeare Center.
Born in New York, Al Pacino rose to fame after Francis Ford Coppola cast him as Michael Corleone in “The Godfather” (1972), despite opposition from the studio. He was nominated for an Oscar nine times and won the award for “Scent of a Woman” in 1993. The actor has also received two SAG Awards, two Emmys and four Golden Globes.
