Wu Yize was crowned the new world champion in snooker on Monday after defeating Shaun Murphy 18-17 in a dramatic final at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. At just 22 years old, Wu became the second youngest winner of the title after Stephen Hendry and only the second Chinese player to lift the trophy, after Zhao Xintong.
"I want to be the first to congratulate Wu Yize, his family, and his entire team for being a fantastic world champion," Murphy told BBC Two. "I hate to be right, I said at the beginning of this season... that one day he would be world champion. It's a pity that it's today," Murphy said.
After the match, the new world champion thanked his mother first. "My mom is the real world champion. She has done so much for me. I am incredibly grateful to have her," Wu said.
