Zverev won his second Grand Slam title of 2026, defeating Shelton in the US Open final

German tennis player Alexander Zverev, the tournament’s top seed, won the US Open on Sunday, the year’s final Grand Slam tournament, after defeating American Ben Shelton in the final, 6-3, 7-6 (7/2), 5-7, 6-2, in New York.

The victory brings Zverev the second Grand Slam title of his career, following the trophy he won in June at Roland Garros. The 29-year-old German has played in three consecutive Grand Slam finals. He lost the Wimbledon final to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

The victory at Flushing Meadows also represents redemption for Zverev, who lost his first US Open final, in 2020, to Austria’s Dominic Thiem after leading 2-0 in sets and coming within two points of winning the trophy. The German also lost finals at Roland Garros, in 2024, and the Australian Open, in 2025.

Zverev remains in second place in the ATP rankings, more than 2,000 points behind Jannik Sinner. He received a $5.5 million prize, while 24-year-old Shelton was awarded $2.8 million and will rise to fourth in the world rankings, the best ranking of his career.
