The top favorite, Alexander Zverev, advanced comfortably to the US Open quarterfinals on Monday after defeating Italy’s Luciano Darderi in straight sets.
Zverev, who had been pushed to a deciding set in his first two matches of the tournament, had no trouble overcoming 21st seed Darderi, winning 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) in two hours and 32 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The winner of the latest edition of the Roland-Garros tournament will face Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, ranked 70th in the world, in the quarterfinals.
Belgian Alexander Blockx, aged 21 (ranked 34th in the world), continued his excellent run at the US Open after defeating Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo (ranked 25th) 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 on Monday, thus qualifying for the quarterfinals.
Alexander Blockx, who secured a place in the top 30 at the end of the Grand Slam tournament, will face Russian Karen Khachanov (ranked 50th) in the quarterfinals. Khachanov eliminated American Learner Tien, the 14th seed, in five sets: 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (6/8), 6-1, 6-4
