The Turkish Football Federation announced that it had ended its collaboration with head coach Vincenzo Montella following a series of poor results for the national team in the Nations League. The decision was announced on the X platform, with the Turkish governing body not immediately specifying who would take over the team.
Turkey lost all four of its matches in the competition, against France, Belgium and Italy, who won twice. The results came after a period in which the team’s performances had steadily declined, despite a squad featuring important players such as Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Arda Güler and Kenan Yildiz.
Montella, 52, took charge of the Turkey national team in September 2023. At the start of his tenure, the Italian achieved well-regarded results and led the team to the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship. Turkey were eliminated by the Netherlands at that stage, losing 2-1.
The Turkish national team was the first team eliminated from this summer’s World Cup. Its next Nations League matches are scheduled for November 12, at home against Belgium, and November 15, away against France. Before taking charge of the national team, Montella coached Fiorentina, Sampdoria, AC Milan and Sevilla.
