Fiorentina announced on Sunday that they had terminated coach Fabio Grosso’s contract after just three rounds of the current Italian league season. The decision comes after an extremely poor start, with the Tuscan team losing all three matches played and dropping to the bottom of the Serie A standings.
Grosso, 48, had been appointed at the beginning of June after leaving Sassuolo. Under his management, Fiorentina were beaten at home by newly promoted Frosinone, 3-0, and Torino, 2-1, while they also lost away in the opening round. The club confirmed the split in a statement but has not yet announced his successor.
A former Italian international and 2006 world champion, Grosso also coached Olympique Lyon, where he was dismissed in November 2023 after seven matches and just one victory. Fiorentina are celebrating their centenary this season, but the coaching change already represents the third major development on the bench in a year, following Stefano Pioli and Paolo Vanoli.
Romanian defender Radu Drăgușin also plays for Fiorentina, on loan from Tottenham for €1.5 million, with a €17.5 million purchase option. The Romanian provided the assist for his team’s goal in the match against Torino and had previously contributed to the 4-1 victory over Benevento in the Coppa Italia. Drăgușin has 30 caps for Romania.
