Carlos Alcaraz, the main favorite of the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro, picked up a nasty injury in his second round match against Thiago Monteiro of Brazil.

The Spaniard sprained his ankle on the second point of the match and retired. The injury makes him doubtful for the Indian Wells and Miami tournaments, where he has many points to defend. Alcaraz has had a difficult start to the year, with no titles and only one final.
