Manchester City filed an official and detailed appeal on Thursday evening against the Premier League verdict, which established that the team seriously breached the competition’s financial rules between 2009 and 2018. The appeal was registered after the independent commission’s report, which analyzed the case that began in 2018, was published on Tuesday.
The English club claims that the decision contains “obvious material errors” of law, principle, and fact, and states that it is unreliable. Manchester City reaffirmed its innocence and said that it has evidence supporting its position regarding the accusations brought by the Premier League.
According to the competition regulations, a new three-member appeals commission will be appointed, one of whose members must have held a judicial position. The hearing should conclude within no more than 12 weeks of the appeal being filed and may not last more than five consecutive days.
The club has not yet received a sanction. This will be determined separately, in a confidential procedure. Possible punishments include a reprimand, a fine, suspension, a points deduction, or expulsion from the Premier League, an unprecedented measure in the history of the English top flight.
