The Norwegian Magnus Carlsen won the official FIDE world champion title in freestyle chess on Sunday, becoming the first player to achieve this distinction. His victory came after a cautious draw in the fourth game, securing a final result of 2.5-1.5 against the American Fabiano Caruana in Weissenhaus, Germany. This victory is significant for Carlsen, considering that he had previously failed to win the FIDE World Championship in Fischer Random.

The championship was organized through an innovative collaboration between FIDE and Freestyle Chess, marking the first official recognition of this format. Uzbek Nodirbek Abdusattor took third place, defeating the German Vincent Keymer. The tournament had a total prize pool of $300,000, and Carlsen won $100,000.
