Andrea Kimi Antonelli became, on Sunday evening, at the Hermanos Rodríguez circuit in Mexico City, the youngest world champion in the history of Formula 1. The Mercedes driver mathematically secured his first title at the age of 20 years and 68 days, surpassing the record set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010, when the German became world champion at the age of 23 years and 134 days.
Antonelli finished the Mexican Grand Prix in third place, a result sufficient to clinch the trophy regardless of his rivals' positions. Victory went to Max Verstappen, who moved up to second place in the overall standings, while Lewis Hamilton finished the race second.
"We did it! And I wouldn't be here without Mercedes and my family. I can't find the words; I'm trying to understand what just happened. It was an incredible season, and the fact that I am sharing this podium with Max and Lewis is something extraordinary. I look forward to more battles in the future. This weekend I felt a little more tense. I am so happy that we managed to do it," the young champion said in the post-race interview.
