Kimi Antonelli, the Mercedes driver, won the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix after Lando Norris lost the advantage gained from pole position following the unfavorable activation of the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) regime on lap 15.
Norris was leading the race comfortably when the neutralization was introduced. The McLaren driver had already passed the pit entry, so he could not take advantage of the favorable conditions for changing tires. In contrast, Antonelli and Max Verstappen pitted during the VSC period.
The neutralization period ended before Norris could make his stop. When he subsequently reached the pits, the operation was slow, and the Briton returned to the track only in fifth place. He recovered to third, but overtaking was difficult on the Spanish circuit.
The success represents Antonelli’s eighth victory in the season’s first 14 races and strengthens his position as championship leader. The Italian has an 81-point lead over his teammate, George Russell, who finished fifth after a complicated race and a confusing strategy. Lewis Hamilton, of Ferrari, retired early due to a failure in the braking system and is 101 points behind the leader.
