The footballer announced on Instagram his retirement from the national team of Argentina, just a few weeks after the defeat suffered by the "Albiceleste" in the World Cup final. Messi, at the age of 39, stated that he has nothing left to offer. He specified that there are very good young players coming up who deserve their place.

"After all this time since the final, after thinking it over for a long time, I want to announce to you all that I am retiring from international football. I have exhausted myself, I have nothing left to offer and, moreover, there are talented young players coming up who deserve to be there," Messi wrote.
