FIFA President Gianni Infantino remains intent on running for a new term at the helm of world football’s governing body in the election scheduled for 2027, despite renewed opposition following the failure of a plan to attract private investors to FIFA competitions.

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed on Sunday that nothing had changed regarding the Swiss official’s candidacy. “Mr. Infantino will run for a new term,” the world governing body’s representative said in a statement carried by Reuters and cited by News.ro.

Infantino, 56, had previously announced that he was seeking a fourth term. His plan to sell investors a 20% stake in the World Cup and other FIFA competitions was abandoned in July after widespread negative reactions. UEFA, the AFC and CONCACAF subsequently called for his resignation.

The FIFA president continues, however, to enjoy the support of the confederations from Africa and South America. So far, no other candidate has officially announced an intention to challenge him in next year’s election. Asked whether he regretted the tense period of the past few weeks, Infantino said he would speak “at the right place and the right time.”
