Gianni Infantino cannot run for a fourth term as FIFA president in 2027, according to Miguel Maduro, the former head of the organization’s Governance Committee. The statement was made in the context of a campaign in which human rights organization FairSquare is calling on member associations to declare him ineligible.

Maduro argues that FIFA’s statutes limit the number of presidential terms and that, consequently, Infantino would no longer be able to hold the position after the end of his current term. His position comes ahead of the elections scheduled for 2027, at a time when the future of FIFA’s leadership is beginning to face public challenges.

FairSquare has sent a letter to FIFA’s member associations, urging them to examine the organization’s statutes and prevent a potential bid by Infantino for a fourth term.

Infantino has led FIFA since 2016. He was re-elected in 2019 and 2023, while the next presidential elections are scheduled for 2027. The dispute concerns the interpretation of the rules on the number of terms and the calculation of the period during which he has held office. So far, FIFA has not announced an official decision on Infantino’s eligibility.
