Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, sought support from the Trump administration after criticism regarding his plan to sell part of the commercial rights of the World Cup. Infantino tried to reach out to U.S. President Donald Trump after his proposal was contested.

Criticism increased following the abandonment of the plan to transfer FIFA's commercial assets to a new entity, backed by private investors, which could have brought in up to $4.2 billion. Now, attention is turning to his candidacy for a new term as FIFA president in 2027, which is under closer scrutiny.

Infantino and Trump had a close relationship, jointly defending at major events, and Infantino presented Trump with the first FIFA Peace Award. Although discussions with American officials were planned, they did not materialize.
