FIFA is considering a major change to or the elimination of the peace prize awarded last year to United States President Donald Trump, following criticism expressed during Thursday’s meeting of the world football governing body’s council.

Several council members called for the distinction to be abandoned, while others requested that it be depoliticized. The 22-member FIFA Social Responsibility in Football Committee is expected to issue a recommendation before the council’s next meeting, scheduled to take place in Doha on December 16.

According to The Guardian, cited by AGERPRES, there is a strong view that the prize has been compromised by its association with Donald Trump. FIFA members also fear that the American president could react diplomatically if the future recipient were not to his liking.

One option under consideration is to turn the prize into an award for someone from the world of football who promotes social harmony and responsibility. One possible criterion would be to ban its being awarded to politicians.

The controversy is amplified by Article 2 of the FIFA Statutes, which prohibits political or governmental interference in football. FIFA created the prize last November to reward exceptional actions in favor of peace and bringing people together around the world.
