Howard Webb, the head of referees in England, has advocated for greater transparency in the decision-making process of refereeing since his appointment to the position four years ago. In 2023, he initiated the 'Mic'd Up' program, which aims to show spectators how officials make key decisions.
A new step in this direction will allow the display of clips from RefCam cameras, mounted on the referees' heads, by the rights holders in the Premier League, Sky Sports and TNT Sports. These recordings, which could previously only be broadcast a few days after matches, will now be available during the games, starting with the 2026-27 season.
Although the International Football Association Board rules do not allow live audio transmission of VAR-reported incidents, Sky Sports and TNT Sports will be able to present one or two sequences from each phase of the match, thus enhancing spectators' understanding of the referees' decisions.
