Mihai Stoichiță, technical director of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), announced that Gică Hagi is considered the first option for the position of head coach of Romania, in the context where Mircea Lucescu is facing health issues and his contract expires in June 2026. Although Hagi has always been preferred for this position, his contractual link with the club Farul Constanța has prevented the move from materializing. Stoichiță emphasized that, at the moment Lucescu leaves the national team, Hagi will be taken into consideration. Additionally, Gică Hagi was also the head coach of Romania in 2001, having a short mandate in which he led the team in four official matches. Furthermore, the FRF recently brought in another former top player, Ilie Dumitrescu, in the role of Player Transition Manager, which could help improve relations with the Golden Generation.
