The FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, stated that the expansion of the World Cup to 64 teams will be analyzed after the conclusion of the current edition of the competition. Infantino believes that a larger tournament would allow more nations to participate, thus contributing to the global development of football. In an interview with the Swiss publication 'Bluewin', he emphasized the importance of designing the competition for the whole world, not just for Europe and South America.
This year, the expansion to 48 teams allowed the participation of nations such as Curaçao, Cape Verde, and Haiti, demonstrating the progress of football at a global level. However, an expansion to 64 teams would involve a more complex format, with four additional groups, which would extend the duration of the competition. Infantino emphasized that providing small countries with the opportunity to participate is essential for their motivation to improve in football.
