Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the president of the FIA, has proposed the removal of term limits for the leadership position of the motorsport governing body, which would allow him to remain in office beyond the current limit of 12 years. Currently, a president can hold the position for a maximum of three terms, each lasting four years. The proposed amendment to the FIA's statutes will be debated and voted on at the FIA General Assembly next month, where approval from members is expected.

This proposal comes after Ben Sulayem was re-elected without an opponent, due to electoral rules that prevented other candidacies. Term limits also apply to other positions within the FIA, such as the president of the anti-doping committee. An FIA spokesperson mentioned that the removal of term limits was inspired by the success of other organizations, such as the NFL, without providing further details on the reasons for this decision.
