The European Chess Union (ECU) has announced the launch of the European Chess Super League, an elite competition for chess clubs in Europe, which will debut in 2027. This becomes the second major continental competition under the auspices of ECU, after the European Club Cup. The Super League will bring together eight top clubs, including the top four ranked in the European Cup, with a total prize fund of 300,000 euros, of which 110,000 euros will go to the champion.
The Super Foundation from Romania will finance the competition, marking a premiere for the involvement of a Romanian entity in large-scale European projects. The President of the Foundation, Augusta Dragic, emphasized the importance of promoting chess and the inspiration that the competition will bring to young generations. Additionally, ECU plans to launch the European Women’s Chess Super League in 2028, with a budget of 400,000 euros. Founded in 1985, ECU represents 54 national federations and annually organizes numerous prestigious events.
