Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open winner and former world No. 1, was surprisingly knocked out in the opening round of the 2023 edition, losing to Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi. The match was intense and lasted nearly four hours with a final score of 6-3, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-7(5), 0-6, 6-4. Medvedev, seeded 13th, had an emotional reaction after the match, smashing a racket. The 2023 US Open takes place at Flushing Meadows, and the defending champions are Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka.
