The incident took place after the final of the WTA Finals, won by Rybakina, when she refused to pose for the official photo alongside Portia Archer, the CEO of the WTA. Former great player Pam Shriver criticized Rybakina's behavior, emphasizing that the athlete earns more in a single tournament than the founders of the WTA. The relationship between Rybakina and the WTA has deteriorated after the suspension of her coach, Stefano Vukov, for abuse. Shriver also commented that it is important for the sport to stand up against abuse, referring to Rybakina's situation. In a press conference, Rybakina responded to Shriver's criticisms, stating that it is not fair for her to make such comments without knowing her personally. Additionally, Shriver has stirred controversy in the past, accusing Ilie Năstase of inappropriate sexual advances.
