On Sunday, November 1, the government of the Republic of Moldova accused MPs Vasile Costiuc and Sergiu Stefanco, from the “Democracy at Home” party, backed by AUR, of spreading false information and increasing the risk of a drone attack on the country’s territory. The two filmed in the border area of the Giurgiulești International Free Port, citing parliamentary oversight of imports of grain and oilseeds from Ukraine.
The MPs claimed that the railcars seen near the port were carrying Ukrainian sunflower seeds intended for processing in the Republic of Moldova, which would disadvantage local farmers. They also criticized alleged exemptions from the import licensing regime and asked border police officers for explanations.
The government in Chișinău described the action as “gross irresponsibility,” stating that the unauthorized filming of port and border infrastructure could endanger state security, especially amid violations of Moldovan airspace by drones.
The government maintains that the grain shown in the footage was in transit to Galați or Constanța and was not entering the domestic market. In September, Moldova’s railway carried approximately 80,000 tonnes of grain in transit, followed by 65,000 tonnes in October. The government also denies imports of Ukrainian sunflower seeds for oil production, explaining that the filmed shipment was Moldovan and intended for export.
