The Presidency of the European Union, held by Cyprus, has sent an official letter to the Republic of Moldova, announcing the opening of accession negotiations. The European Union considers that Moldova is ready to begin discussions for Cluster 1, which pertains to fundamental values.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova, Daniela Morari, emphasized the importance of this step, highlighting support from Western partners. Deputy Prime Minister Cristina Gherasimov stated that the EU's decision reflects intense diplomatic efforts and that Moldova will continue to advance based on its own merits.
In the coming period, discussions will focus on finalizing the administrative procedures for the formal opening of the first cluster. The current leadership of Moldova aims to sign the EU accession treaty by 2028.
This development comes in a favorable context, considering that the EU has decided to advance the accession requests of Ukraine and Moldova. The opening of negotiation clusters requires unanimous approval from EU member states, and recent political changes in Hungary have paved the way for progress in this process.
